I’ve read this series at least three times through. When I first heard about the possibility of a TV series and then all the ensuing ‘red-light, gree-light drama, I thought: ‘Better not to have it than suffer through the creation of a half-assed take on such an iconic series of books.

Got to admit, I love Idris Elba. I think he’s a revelation as an actor. I’m still not sure he’s the right man for this role, BUT I’m so ready for him to prove me wrong I can barely stand it. I really want this to work… no. I want this to be insanely good!

I feel the same way. I think I’ve been waiting for it to be a film since I read finished the series 9-10 years ago, but now I’m nervous. People don’t seem to believe me when I tell them how unbelievably profound this series is, so I’ve stopped saying it. (Til now; now there’s movie, so anything goes.)

If not for the laws of physics, it’d be a young Clint Eastwood, but it can’t. Part of me still can’t believe there’s going to be a black Gunslinger. It sort of feels like when Obama won the presidency. Ok, not quite, but hopefully, you know what I mean.

I’m not really sure what’s suppose to happen after this one. And are they conflating some of the following books into this movie? I read there’s going to be a white, waify actress playing a very minor monster character, yes? I can’t even remember who/what it is. I have to read up more, but what I’m perhaps prematurely pissed about is the absence of Odetta Holmes. The ka-tet is nothing without all its members, and she’s one of the best female/black female fiction characters ever. If they assemble the whole group in the movie and she’s not in it, I’m out. -Erica

You said it! I’m just as nervous. I remember carrying these books around with me NOT wanting to talk about them at first to people I knew if they had not read any of them! You are right about a young Clint Eastwood- he would have been ideal for the role, but a BLACK GUNSLINGER??? And yes, this is absolutely up there with Obama… why not?
My take was this one is based on book one. If that’s the case, and we never know with Hollywood, the incredibly badass, take-no-prisoners Odetta wouldn’t be a part of it I’m thinking. Still, you’re right again that Odetta is easily one of the best female/black fiction characters ever. I wholly agree. As for the ‘monster character? I am hereby unable to go there! All I can say is I hope it’s really minor or taken out at the last minute.
I keep thinking: yeah, the filming has begun, the on-set photos have started to leak, but dang it, I need to know MORE!!! I’d love to see a full on franchise thing happen with Idris if they do what they’re ‘suppose to’ with the first one.
        I guess we’ll see…

Please, Stephen King, don’t let them screw this up!!!

Yeah, I finally read an article mentioning all main cast members and it’s going to be more of a first book thing. King just tweeted something cryptic about Roland’s tower cycle though, so something wild might be coming! Thanks for the link. It’s definitely an article worth the read.
Yeah, see, I’m kinda not liking this minor character from book seven elevated to possible major role- thing already. This stinks of Hollywood’s latest desire to make potential franchises more desirable and profitable by adding the latest ‘hot’ model/actress to up the watch ability factor…
I want this to work, I really do, but the more I hear including another piece where Stephen King in a podcast states he has been adamant about keeping the story as true to the books as possible, but then admitting there will be ‘changes’ with the first movie that fans of the books may not like at first… WTF???
There’s a part of me wanting to disconnect from any more info about this film because I think there’s trouble brewing, caused by too many cooks with their spoons in the pot. I know I won’t though because like lots of fans, I want this film and I want it to work, AND I want it to set the right tone for future films based on the books…
AAArrrgggh, I guess we’ll know the final outcome on January 13th next year.
