Creator Maia “Crown” Williams says: Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Arts – M.E.C.C.A., aka MECCAcon, is a large comic book and artist convention held annually in Detroit, Michigan. The primary reason M.E.C.C.A was established was to promote knowledge and activity in the youth art culture. It is my mission to make sure that children know that not all “heroes” look the same—that many actually look just like THEM. It is also important to learn the origin of comic books and what the word “hero” actually means. Unlike many “comic cons,” we don’t just focus only on comic books. Art comes in many forms, and we want to highlight them all. At the end of the day, art is and always will be creative expression.

This is some of what you’ll find at MECCAcon:

  • COMIC BOOKS
  • FINE ART
  • INDIE FILM FEST
  • ILLUSTRATION
  • AFROFUTURISM
  • ASTROBLACKNESS
  • STEAMPUNK DEVELOPMENT CLASS
  • INDEPENDENT FILM
  • DJ ARTISTS
  • AFRICAN DANCE
  • URBAN GARDENING
  • AFRICAN MARTIAL ARTS
  • GAMING
  • GRAFFITI ART
  • ARTISANS AND THEIR HANDCRAFTED ITEMS
  • CLOTHING DESIGNERS
  • SCI-FI
  • YOUTH LITERATURE
    and MORE…

The whitewashing just doesn’t stop. A biopic of Mary Magdalene is a huge and admirable undertaking. So much opportunity for better choices than this.
