#POCtober: Snoop Dogg’s Bones (2001) & Hood of Horror (2006)

Snoop Dogg, Pam Grier, Khalil Kain, Clifton Powell, Bianca Lawson & Michael T Weiss

Billy Dee Williams, Method Man, Ernie Hudson, Danny Trejo, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Pooch Hall, Aries Spears, Tayshaun Prince, Noel Gugliemi, Daniella Alonso

Snoop Dogg waxes so eloquent about the iconic Blaxploitation cinema he grew up on that its easy to see how his ventures into acting have crossed into an updated version of that genre’s horror subset. I feel like eventually there needs to be a third title created to round out these two unrelated forays. Snoop’s ability to generate onscreen charisma with just the right amount of irony or straight menace translates beautifully into supernatural showmanship.

POCtober: Audition (1999)

Director: Takashi Miike
Not for the easily squicked. Gorgeous torture porn. At least from what I glimpsed as I hid behind my pillow. Easy to see why Takashi Miike recently Rome Fests’ Maverick Director Award.

#POCtober: The Sixth Sense (1999)

Director: M Night Shyamalan
The definition of an instant classic, this smart, beautifully shot and acted film catapulted M Night Shyamalan into revered company alongside the likes of Hitchcock and Serling. The director’s subsequent efforts have been much less accessible or simply lacked the psychological daring and warmth of this 1999 endeavor.

Despite being a victim of his own success, Shyamalan has persevered. Now that this award-winning writer/director has shifted to the smaller screen perhaps TV can present him with a new challenge to re-awaken his mojo. Shyamalan currently has series in development with SyFy, NBC and FOX.

Intruders (2011)

Directed by: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo
Significant for its unapologetically bilingual script, Intruders was based on a story by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marquest wrote the Spanish/English adaptation and Oscar-nominated Juan Carlos Fresnadillo of 28 Weeks Later directed. It stars Clive Owen, Kerry Fox, Carice van Houten, Pilar López de Ayala and Izan Corchero.

#POCtober: I Am Legend (2007)

Will Smith, Alice Braga, Willow Smith
I wanted more from this for WS because this is one of my fave stories and it could have really been a nice showcase for his considerable range.

In the meantime, a possible sequel is in the making.
