#POCtober: Adrian Pasdar Horror Recs

Currently portraying General Glenn Talbot on ‘Agents of SHIELD’, Persian American actor Adrian Pasdar is probably better known as Nathan Petrelli, superhuman politician from Tim Kring’s NBC series Heroes.

The actor has done any number of horror roles on both TV and in the cinema and these are two of my favorites.

Near Dark (1987)
Near Dark
was a cult hit blending vampires into a modern Western motif. Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow (Hurt Locker, Zereo Dark Thirty) co-wrote and helmed this dramatic road trip horror. Her direction gives things a feel that is somehow both epic and trashy. A 21 year old Pasdar stars in one of his first sizable roles. He is the heart-throb reluctant hero while Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton up the creepy factor with over-the-top bad guy action. A classic.

Home Movie (2008)
A dark and effective horror indie in the found footage motif that takes a seemingly idyllic family into sociopathy with a tinge of the supernatural. Here, 20 years after Near Dark, Pasdar plays an earnest pastor and adoring dad trying to create normalcy where there is increasingly less and less of it.

#POCtober: The Wolfman (2010)

Benicio Del Toro
Originally, this film was to be directed by the astonishing Mark Romanek. Instead, Universal went with Joe Johnston whose chief appeal seems to have been his promise to get the whole thing done and dusted in under 3 months. The results of this decision are abundantly painful.

Korean Webtoons Wiki calls this webtoon “one of the most horrifying online comics of all time”. In classic urban legend style, the toon has been word-of-mouth hyped as being based on real events- namely the 2002 suicide of one “Mrs. Cho”, a divorced mother who offs herself after losing a custody battle.

A quick cruise through You Tube brings up any number of reaction videos- people filming their pals flipping out as they watch the webtoon for the first time. It makes for an effective scare prank during the Halloween season- or any time, really, you feel like squickishly tormenting your loved ones. Enjoy!

#POCtober: Candyman (1992)

Tony Todd, Vanessa Williams, Kasi Lemmons
To turn his short story “The Forbidden” into an acclaimed Hollywood film, Clive Barker swapped the setting from a UK tenement to a Chicago housing project and brought in some major talent. There’re Tony Todd, Vanessa Williams, Kasi Lemmons, Virginia Madsen – even a score by avant garde composer Phillip Glass. When it was released, Candyman managed that rare feat of wowing both critics and movie-goers. Its success led to two sequels, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and Candyman 3: Day of the Dead.

Vampire Hunter D (1985)

Inspired by a series of Japanese novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano, this was one of the first anime films released outside of Japan. Combining Gothic horror with post-apocalyptic sci-fi in a Western framework, VHD features memorable voice-acting performances in both English and Japanese. Some have argued the movie adaptation is actually a genre-crossing homage to the film Shane.

#POCtober: The Devil’s Backbone (2001)

Director: Guillermo del Toro
A Gothic horror tale in the most orthodox sense, The Devil’s Backbone (El espinazo del diablo) is set in 1939, the final year of the Spanish Civil War. Written by del Toro, Antonio Trashorras and David Muñoz, it was independently produced by Pedro Almodóvar, and filmed in Madrid.

Del Toro considers this to be his most personal work.
