#POCtober: “I Put a Spell On You”

One of Halloween’s Rare Seasonal Songs

Though, unlike a Christmas carol, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ signature song is at home any time of year, “I Put a Spell on You” is a fitting fixture during this season of magic, mystery and things going bump in the night. Covered by many (both George Clinton and Queen Latifah have given it a fling), it is decidedly Hawkins’ original frantic recording that made the song a standard. His over-the-top, theatrical “witch doctor” stage performances of it hail from a different era – but even in its day the record itself seemed anachronistic, like something hailing from the time of “race records” or Jazz back when it was “Jass.”

POCtober: Audition (1999)

Director: Takashi Miike
Not for the easily squicked. Gorgeous torture porn. At least from what I glimpsed as I hid behind my pillow. Easy to see why Takashi Miike recently Rome Fests’ Maverick Director Award.

#POCtober: The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Directors: Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez
The most influential horror flick of the last 15 years, The Blair Witch Project single-handedly set off the whole found footage sub-genre avalanche. For better or worse, its style is still the most imitated in horror film for both big studios and indie contenders. Because its motif has been so frequent borrowed, the backlash over time has been to dismiss TBWP‘s success as a fluke. But it is one of the only important horror movies in recent memory that can claim anything much in the way of originality. In a genre crowded with rewrites and remakes and well-worn tropes this is an accomplishment that endures- long after the film’s ferocity has lapsed.
