This is ridiculous and very dangerous to depict slaves as happy go lucky willing participants in their demise. He wears the mask…

I read a statement by the book’s artist and she talked about research on some of Washington’s slaves. There was one who was highly skilled and proud and who had a more prominent role in the household/grounds. I always lean towards wanting to know all the facts and not just the ones that lend themselves to supporting a popular view even if that view is correct and one I fully agree with. So I DO want to hear about the experiences of ALL slaves, even those that don’t match what we usually think of. HOWEVER, this in’t a research paper or even just a book for adults. This is a children’s book, and it’s still beyond me why someone would choose to present this particular story, in this way, to kids. There’re ways to communicate to children that many slaves were highly skilled and proud of their abilities without positioning them as happy about their position. That cover picture! OH MY GOD! -Erica

Of course the highly skilled slaves were proud, we are a proud people. Do you really think the slaves would tell anyone that interviewed them that they are unhappy being slaves? Of course they played the game in order to survive which is why I referenced “We wear the mask.” I don’t base my opinions on other people’s opinions just because they are popular.
