I truly wish to thank you for posting this! Seeing Octavia Butler’s face on the screen immediately took me back to the day I met her at a book signing in San Francisco.
I remember she had such a powerful, focused presence. It almost seemed most of the people in line to get her autograph were afraid to really talk to her. When my turn came, I actually managed to make her laugh! I’ll never forget that or how gracious she was.
I also love seeing Nichelle Nichols talk about Dr. King’s insistence on her taking the part of Uhura on ‘Star Trek’. Imagining ‘Star Trek’ today without her is just impossible.
What a fantastic piece of black history this is!
As a writer myself (Sci-Fi and Fantasy), I’ve never doubted the darkness of the skin my first book’s main characters possess, but I’m sure I’m not the only black writer looking to publish a first novel and wondering if those characters are represented in their ‘best light’.
This ‘Black Sci-Fi documentary is food for my soul and inspiration to not only finish what I’ve started with my novel(s), but to be proud of what has come before and what I can contribute to its future.
Once again, thank you for posting this!
